Opening Remarks
Good Morning and Welcome to Day 3 of the 2025 Mississippi Trauma Informed Care Conference!
Speaker
Gloria Morrow, Ph.D.
Men of every community sometimes suffer in silence because they have not been given permission to speak about, nor address, the traumas they have experienced. This presentation is based on the book, stage play, and documentary written by the presenter, entitled. “The Things that Make Men Cry.” During this presentation, the presenter will discuss the research that formed the basis of the book that describes the various traumas men have experienced, how those unresolved traumas have impacted their lives, and the value of utilizing culturally responsive trauma informed CBT and
Mindfulness techniques in working with men.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1. After completion of the session, participants will be able to identify and articulate the societal expectations that influence men's emotional expression, particularly the tendency to suppress feelings related to trauma.
Objective 2: After completion of the session, participants will be able to recognize the
psychological and emotional signs of trauma in men, including behaviors and coping mechanisms that indicate silent suffering.
Objective 3: After completion of the session, participants will be able to apply trauma-informed cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques and mindfulness practices specifically tailored for men, enhancing their understanding of how these approaches can facilitate emotional healing and resilience in the face of trauma.

Transition to keynote
Sidney Smith, LCSW
Currently, most clinicians, first responders and other healthcare professionals are unaware of how they can contribute to the perpetuation of stigma. Professionals providing direct cadre should be educated about stigma and its impacts, as well as training on how to best fight stigma to improve access to treatment, engagement, and quality of care. This presentation will help participants acknowledge personal biases and strategies to combat counterproductive attitudes that cause harm to the same people our code of ethics, profession and policy is designed to protect.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1. After completion of the session, participants will be able to acknowledge personal biases when dealing with a person with substance use/abuse issues.
Objective 2. After completion of the session, participants will be able to become aware
of strategies to combat unhelpful/counterproductive attitudes towards persons with
substance abuse issues.
Objective 3. After completion of the session, participants will be able to engage in
healing conversations that motivate and encourage growth and continued sobriety.

Transition to keynote
David Garlock, B.A.
David Garlock is a formerly incarcerated national public speaker who shares his adverse childhood experiences. In doing this, he will show how providers can get involved in dismantling the trauma-to-prison pipeline. This particular pipeline affects more people than the school-to-prison pipeline or the foster-care-to-prison pipeline. Providers will be challenged to get involved in the 3 areas of the pipeline to help those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1. After completion of the session, participants will be able to discuss the presenter's story of trauma endured as a child that led to him ending up in prison, including trauma endured in the prions system
Objective 2. After completion of the session, participants will be able to discuss the 3 aspects of the trauma-to-prison pipeline with ways providers can be involved in dismantling it.
Objective 3. After completion of the session, participants will be able to discuss the next steps and challenge to get involved in helping those who have been harmed as children and through the system.
